SHINOLA PRESENTS:
DESIGNING FOR THE FUTURE
In celebration of Detroit Month of Design, we’re partnering with Periodicals to host three conversations on time: how we measure it, use it, and carry it forward.
Event Schedule
CONVERSATION #1:
TIME & CRAFT
Time & Craft brings together practitioners whose work spans music, textiles, food, photography, skateboarding, sculpture and furniture, to consider craft as a bridge between what we inherit and what we create next.
What skills, rituals and ways of making are worth carrying forward, and how might they evolve to remain alive in the future?
Wednesday, September 9th
6-8pm

CONVERSATION #2:
TIME & SYSTEMS
Time & Systems brings together practinioners whose work across music, technology, art, strategy and cultural infrastructure considers how the systems we build today create the conditions for what becomes possible tomorrow.
Within Designing for the Future, Time & Systems asks how we might create structures flexible enough to evolve while holding onto the values that made them necessary in the first place.

CONVERSATION #3:
TIME & SPACE
Time & Space brings together practitioners whose work moves between landscapes, bookstores, homes, residencies and cultural institutions, to consider how spaces accumulate meaning through ritual, memory, community and repeated use. Their practices invite us to think about timelessness not as remaining unchanged, but as a space’s ability to continually generate new meaning across generations.
Within Designing for the Future, the conversation asks us to consider not simply what the spaces of the future should look like, but what we hope will happen inside them: what makes people return, what allows a place to hold memory while continuing to change, and how we create spaces capable of producing cultural moments that might outlive us.
