The Power of Swiss Watch Parts

BY Shinola Team

If you’re even somewhat interested in watches, you’ve likely heard the term “swiss watch” or “swiss watch parts”. But what makes watches and watch parts from Switzerland so important in this industry?

Maybe the shortest answer is that Swiss watch parts are made of high-quality metal substrates for their gears, components, and link pins, which means that your watch will run smoothly for years to come. When compared to plastic components, these metal substrates are extremely durable and reliable.

And what about the difference between a Swiss watch and a watch that’s made with Swiss parts? We’ll break down the difference for you and explain how each qualifies its distinction.

What Makes a Swiss Watch a Swiss Watch

While it might be easy to assume that a Swiss watch is simply a watch that was created in Switzerland, it turns out that it’s actually quite a bit more complicated than that. This type of watch has to check off a few things before it can be considered a genuine Swiss watch. Commonly, not all parts of a watch are “Swiss made,” but in order to be considered “certified Swiss,” at least 60% of the watch’s production cost must be tied to operations in Switzerland. However, that cost percentage may vary depending on the type of watch it is. For example, a mechanical watch must have 80% of its production costs in connection with Switzerland rather than the standard 60%.

Most importantly, however, a true Swiss watch must have a Swiss movement. Meaning that the watch movement, or what is sometimes referred to as “the caliber” of the watch, must be assembled and cased up in Switzerland. The watch will also undergo a full quality inspection by the manufacturer in Switzerland. Lastly, for the movement to be deemed Swiss, 50% of the parts that make up the movement must be Swiss made.

With Swiss watches, you’ll find that they are reliable and well made. However, Swiss watches tend to come with that large luxury price tag. You’ll often find yourself paying for the “Swiss Made” label or the brand name of the watch. If you are someone who is looking for a durable, everyday watch but can’t justify the big purchase price of a Swiss watch, a Swiss part watch may just be the ideal timepiece for you.

Swiss Part Watches

This type of watch has many of the same dependable, long-lasting components that you would find in a Swiss watch. They’re made with steel and other high-quality metals like titanium or gold that are proven to be stronger and last you years to come.

Swiss part watches are not required to be assembled in Switzerland, but instead, many are manufactured in the USA or Asia. You’ll also find that while this type of watch does not bear the certification stamp signifying it’s Swiss-made parts, a watch made up of Swiss parts is commonly known to be more reliable than watches without.
