#TravelWithShinola to Iceland

BY Taylor Rebhan

#TravelWithShinola is our newest adventure in following our watches and leather goods in action. To kickstart things off, we had Detroit-based photographer Hayden Stinebaugh pick his favorite Shinola products from our Men’s Holiday Gift Guide to take on his trip to Iceland. His advice when planning your next adventure: think big and pack the essentials.

We want to see where your timepiece and leather goods travel, so tag your photos with #TravelWithShinola on Instagram and Twitter, and we’ll repost our favorites to our own channels.

Add Iceland to your bucket list, and let Hayden’s photos inspire you to plan your next escape.

When in Iceland, one must pet the Icelandic horses the country has become so well-known for. Hayden wears The Rambler Tachymeter, known for its polished bezel and a black dial with a black rubber strap. Every aspect of this refined timepiece has been engineered to ensure exact timekeeping in moments when every second counts (like pulling over the car to pet Icelandic horses).

Although it doesn’t get as cold as Detroit in Iceland, the Shinola + Geier Glove Company Deerskin-lined Gloves and Shinola + Faribault Jaquard Woolen Scarf proved to be the perfect layering pieces for Hayden’s trip. Both warm weather accessories are unisex styles perfect for transitioning from mild to cold temperatures.

The beauty of The Rambler Tachymeter lies in its functional design elements like the rubber strap and chronograph stopwatch function. The bezel has a tachymetric scale which allows the wearer to accurately measure speed in terms of time.

Sometimes you just need to drive with no planned route — Hayden found this lake on the side of the road while driving around Skaftafell National Park. It’s recommended to take a few days to fully experience this beautiful park. Waterfalls, mountains, hiking routes and glaciers can all be found throughout this park. Stop at the nature center for a guided tour.

The Slim Bifold Wallet held all of Hayden’s cash and cards for the duration of the trip. He also jot down travel notes in his Small Hard Linen Journal

To switch up his look, Hayden also brought along The Guardian 41.5mm — a new rounded square faced watch that can easily be dressed up or down.

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3022″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

Hayden recommends renting a car and driving to the beautiful black-sand beaches in Vik village found on Iceland’s South Coast. Offshore lie stacks of basalt rock, remnants of a once more extensive cliffline Reynisfjall, now battered by the sea. There is no landmass between here and Antarctica and the Atlantic waves can attack with full force.

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3023″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

The Rambler Tachymeter and Shinola + Geier Company Deer-Skin Lined Gloves on the famous black sand beach. The world-famous Reynisfjara shore in Myrdalur is widely regarded as the most impressive black-sand beach in Iceland.

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3024″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

Reynisfjara is a black sand beach and features an amazing cliff of basalt columns resembling a rocky step pyramid, which is called Gardar (above). The cliffs west of the beach are home to many seabirds like puffins.

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3025″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

While hiking at Teigarhorn Nature Reserve, one of Iceland’s most beautful national parks, Hayden made sure to keep the Shinola + Geier Company Deer-Skin Lined Gloves and Shinola + Leatherman Multitool on hand at all times.

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3026″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

The Shinola + Kordal Knit Hat was the perfect layer when standing on top of the windy Dettifoss waterfall — one of the most powerful waterfalls in all of Europe. The sheer size and power felt from this waterfall was one of Hayden’s favorite memories from the trip.

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3027″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

The Shinola + Leatherman Multitool isn’t something you can pack in your carry-on bag, but Hayden still highly recommends packing it in your checked luggage if you’re going on a trip where you’ll be spending a lot of time exploring the outdoors. (The bottle opener comes in handy just about anywhere)

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3028″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

Hayden recommends checking out the icebergs at Glacier Lagoon. This lagoon is a recent one, and the result of a warming climate. The surface is at sea level and sea water flows into the lagoon at high tide. Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier, Breiðamerkurjökull, and large icebergs float on the lagoon.

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3029″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

Another spot to explore is the Kirkjufell Mountain. Surrounded by beaches and waterfalls, the hike to the top takes one and a half hours — time it with The Guardian 41.5mm watch (above).

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3030″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

Hayden protected his phone the entire trip with the sturdy Shinola Leather iPhone Case. You can find all his iPhone shots, here

[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”3031″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”540″,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”960″}}]]

The Shinola + Geier Company Deer-Skin Lined Gloves are right in their element amongst the Kirkjufell Mountain backdrop.

Kurkjufell Mountain (pictured above) attracts photographers all year long. There is something special about its shape, location and colors: green in summer, orange in winter, white with snow, at sunrise and sunset.
