A JOURNAL BY SHINOLA DEDICATED TO JOY OF CRAFT

Manhattan, Meet Detroit

BY Taylor Rebhan

Consider this your (in)formal invitation to come hang out in our just opened flagship retail store in Tribeca. We think it’s worth getting excited about, even in a city like New York, which actually (now that we think about it) isn’t like any other city we know of.

We have our full line of Shinola watches on hand, of course, as well as our bicycles, leather goods, journals, and shoeshine. But it doesn’t end there.

We also wear our Detroit heart on our proverbial sleeve, and feature handcrafted apparel, jewelry, ceramics, and more, all made in the Motor City. We’ll also carry both collaboratively-produced and curated items within each product category in order to more fully communicate the story behind Shinola, and to give you an idea of where our company is headed.

The store itself has been meticulously renovated to honor the history of the neighborhood and the building we’re housed in. From a design standpoint, we’ve drawn inspiration from artist Donald Judd’s library in Marfa, TX, and we’ve managed to get our hands on an incredible 1930s Bronze Mercator map, which in all honesty is worth coming into the store just to see.

On top of that, the purveyor of all things delicious known as The Smile will be in the store full-time, serving up coffee and baked goods, and curating a newsstand featuring a selection of books and magazines from around the world.

So come on in, grab a cup of coffee, and introduce yourself. We’re from the midwest—we like to meet our neighbors, and we love to chat.
