A JOURNAL BY SHINOLA DEDICATED TO JOY OF CRAFT

Makers Monday Returns With An American-Made Comeback

BY Taylor Rebhan

Makers Monday is returning to support American craftsmanship. One year ago, Shinola created the national Makers Monday campaign to celebrate and support the resurgence of American making. This year, with new partners Cool Hunting and New Balance, Shinola is urging consumers to ring in another holiday season by pledging to buy an American-made product on the first Monday after Thanksgiving. If you’re a Maker, get involved by registering your brand.

Leading up to Monday, December 1st, we’re encouraging consumers to pledge their support, and we’re featuring makers from around the country—Makers like you and Shinola supply brands—on the Makers Monday website and on the Shinola blog. Buying American-made products creates jobs in America. If every American of voting ages spends just $10 on Makers Monday, that adds up to 2.4 billion dollars.

Builders, artisans, craftspeople—are a growing force in the cities and towns in which we live. A new generation of Americans have emerged who are making not just as a hobby, but as a career—learning and appreciating the trades of those who came before and incorporating these values into their own lives and practices. The blue-collar tradition has become a cause for pride again. And it will generate a little more pride than usual on Monday, December 1, 2014.
