For Love of the Written Word — Celebrating Calligraphy in our London Store

BY Taylor Rebhan

Chiara’s book Nib + Ink will make its debut on March 10 and we’ll have copies available at our London store.

Join us this Thursday from 6-9 p.m. for a glass of bubbly, and meet author Chiara Perano, who will be creating unique lettering to adorn complimentary journals at our London store (28 Foubert’s Pl, London W1F 7PR).

Even if you can’t meet us in London, learn more about Chiara and Lampligher London below.

What sparked you to write your book and when does it come out?

The book comes out on March 10 — this week! I was contacted by an editor at Penguin Random House to write the book, and I didn’t believe my eyes! We set to work fairly quickly, and I think it’s been just over a year since we started getting our ideas down on paper. I teach workshops so I have a very good understanding of what people struggle with when they’re learning, which is why I’ve included lots of tips in the book, along with how to make it easier for people to incorporate handwriting into their lives, which is our goal.

How did you get into calligraphy in the first place?

I am a self-taught calligrapher, so I learned with a lot of practice from a basic level, purely from online guides and older books. I put the modern calligraphy twist on it as my style developed, which I think gives a good foundation and the ability to add personality into my work.

When did you decide to turn your hobby into a career?

I thought I would offer calligraphy to my clients as an extra to my invitation designs, but it seems to have completely overtaken, which is amazing! I didn’t think it would get to this level, but I’m very honored to be working with some fantastic brands and VIPs now.

How did you come up with the name Lamplighter London?

‘The Lamplighter’ was my favorite poem as a child, my mum and I used to read it from an old copy of my nana’s school book from 1930 — so very sentimental! I felt it was a fitting name for my calligraphy business, as it ties to Victorian era when handwritten letters were a way of life, and lamplight shone on the streets of London.

What is your favorite project that you’ve worked on since starting your own business?

Working behind the scenes of London Fashion week recently was a particular favorite. The buzz around the show was incredible, and it was great to be a part of.

Anything else you would like to say about making a career with calligraphy?

If you’re planning to start your own business be really passionate about your message and what you do — it’s hard to have an off-switch when it’s your baby. I dedicate so much time to bettering my skills and style, and because I love it, it doesn’t ever seem like a chore.
