Formerly a practicing architect, Bill Stout now focuses on his Jackson Square collection, which includes theoretical tomes (Ancient Wisdom and Modern Knowhow) to futuristic hypotheses (Thoughts on Designing Information). 10. City Lights Bookstore

Lawrence Ferlinghetti opened his iconic shop in 1953, introducing the world to revolutionary Beat voices like Ginsberg and Burroughs. Today, the stacks fill three floors, none more delightful than the Poetry Room up top.
