Opened in 1998 beneath the Basque Hotel boardinghouse, this sidestreet joint stirs a mean menu of cocktails and throws its tasty “Punch Drunk” brunch every weekend. Awesome blend of stepped-up drinks and a jukebox sensibility. 15 Romolo Place 15romolo.com

Since 1956, Papa Gianni Giotta and family have welcomed artists, writers and neighborhood folk with house-roasted espresso, concerts, and the best sidewalk seats in North Beach. 601 Vallejo St. caffetrieste.com
