Great Americans Series: Burton Watch 42mm
RIDING ANSWERS EVERYTHING
Ride on. The latest watch in the Shinola Great Americans Series is dedicated to the founder and soul of snowboarding, Jake Burton Carpenter. Limited to a run of 1977 pieces—in memory of the year Jake founded Burton Snowboards out of a barn in Vermont—our most rough-and-tumble sport watch, the Duck, is custom-detailed to honor the legend (and survive any pow turn you throw at it).
Crafted from rugged stainless steel and outfitted with extra thick sapphire crystal, this watch can take a tumble and come back for more—just like Jake. An exclusive blue colorway with red and white detailing harkens back to vintage Burton Performer boards, and the caseback features a 3D image of Jake doing what he did best. Adventure-proof and with the attitude to prove it, the Duck is the perfect tribute to the man who couldn’t resist shredding a coat of fresh powder…or teaching his kids how to flip the bird.
This Great Americans Series watch comes with exclusive gear designed by the talented craftspeople at Burton. Each piece is an homage to Jake and his hands-on passion for making things: a 1980 Burton Backhill Replica Board, influenced by Jake’s early board shapes; a convertible carrying case that doubles as a backpack cooler; an ice scraper modelled after one of Jake’s licenses; and finally, a coffee table book filled to the brim with insights into the life of the soul of snowboarding.
THE JAKE BURTON
CARPENTER GIFT SET
A timeless tribute in honour of the undeniable
impact that Jake had on all of us.
In November 2019, the world lost one of the greatest pioneers of this generation, Jake Burton Carpenter, founder of Burton Snowboards and widely deemed the godfather of snowboarding. From humble beginnings in the backhills of Vermont, Jake changed the world and fostered an entirely new culture, community, and lifestyle by having as much fun as possible. He was, and will forever be, the most influential snowboarder of all time.

13: The Story of
Jake Burton Carpenter
A full-size, hardbound coffee table book with an eclectic mix of images gathered from family, friends, and world-class photographers, 13: The Story of Jake Burton Carpenter tells the tale of his extraordinary life in a way that has never been told before. It pulls back the curtain on the turns he took in his meteoric rise to the top—from the chaos of his youth to his final days on snow standing sideways. But this is not just the story of how an entrepreneur and his family built the world’s most successful snowboard company. Or how Jake, an innovator, made many of his company’s biggest decisions from a chairlift, not a desk. It is a deep dive inside the mind of a man who always put the soul of snowboarding first.
Replica Burton Backhill Board
Debuting in 1979, the BB1 (Burton Backhill) was the first production
board that Jake ever put out into the world and forever holds a special
place in the hearts of those who stand sideways. This is also the board
that Jake is riding in the iconic image that’s etched into the back of the
Shinola watch. More than just some department store toy, the BB1 was
offered in regular and goofy versions that were lightweight, featured
tool-free binding adjustments, and had both top and bottom graphics.
Intended as more of a display piece, this BB1 definitely wouldn’t pass Jake’s durability test. Ride it if you dare.
Leather Cooler Bag
A relentless passion for product innovation is what always drove
Jake; that and stylish practicality. When Step On was first developed,
Jake gifted a set of limited-edition boots and bindings to all Burton
employees. Instead of packaging the boots in a boring ol’ box, he
developed a convertible carrying case that doubled as a backpack
cooler. It’s what inspired this packaging for his book. Amongst many
things, Jake took pride in how he transported his beverages. We think
he would be proud of this one.
Cheers to Jake!
