Leather

  • Dearborn Leather
     This premium, buttery leather is rich in character and ages beautifully as it patinas. The natural grain is smoother in some parts and pebbled in others, which means no two bags are alike and each has a unique hand feel.
  • Double-Face Luxe Leather
     This rich leather is beautiful on the outside—and the inside. Its pebbled texture on both the interior and exterior is refined and soft to the touch. Leather goods crafted from double-face luxe feature a contrasting color on the interior that adds dimension and style, and the coated leather makes the inside easy to clean.
  • Explorer Leather
     Explorer leather combines your favorite elements of Outrigger and Navigator leather—soft and durable meets rich and rugged. Its rustic character will beautifully age and develop a rich patina.
  • Faille-lined
     Faille is a type of fabric which is woven with a faintly ribbed pattern, creating a distinctive textured feel.
  • Harness Leather
     Harness leather is known for its durability and longevity. sturdy, yet smooth to the touch, this leather will quickly develop a vintage patina, showing unique characteristics of the leather with use and time.
  • Heritage Leather
     Heritage leather is smooth with a subtle matte luster. Its rich color has highs and lows, giving the leather depth as well as a vintage charm. It will develop a gentle patina over time, adding to its timeless character.
  • Latigo Leather
     Featuring a raised pebble grain texture with a rich, dark tipping, this leather has a structured look that is sophisticated and modern. designs in this leather can be worn from day to night.
  • Luxe Grain Leather
     Luxe grain leather is soft to the touch. it has a consistent texture that is relaxed and sporty.
  • Nappa Leather
     Nappa is a soft, smooth leather. this classic is finished with a gentle and sporty luster. colors are pure and eloquent.
  • Natural Leather
     This premium, leather is smooth to the touch with rich highs and lows, giving the bag dimension. This leather patinas, making the bag age beautifully as it gains character over time.
  • Navigator Leather
     During the tanning process, navigator leather is infused with oils that give it a rich, creamy hand feel. This no-fuss leather has color variation that naturally occurs with wear, enhancing the character of this casual leather.
  • Nubuck Leather
     This leather is soft as suede, but with a thicker skin. nubuck is a durable top-grain leather that is buffed on the outside to make it smooth to the touch.
  • Nylon
     Nylon is very durable, but allows the design to be light and easy.
  • Outlaw Leather
     A pre-burnished vegetable tanned calf leather that results in a rich patina through normal wear.
  • Outrigger Leather
     This brushed leather may look light enough to float, but with toughness as its greatest characteristic, it’s ready for dirt, dust, dings and scrapes. it will develop a rich patina and age beautifully.
  • Pebble Grain
     This rich leather features a distinct pebbled texture. Both consistent and refined, it is soft to the touch.
  • Signature Leather
     This refined leather is rich and supple with a consistent texture. Its luster will matte over time, adding contrast and enhancing its character.
  • Smooth Grain Leather
     With minimal grain texture, this leather is ultra-smooth. Its modern look is complemented by a soft and supple feel.
  • Smooth Leather
     This leather is ultra-smooth with a minimal grain texture. Semi-matte with a gentle luster, this leather has a modern and versatile look, complemented by a soft and supple feel.
  • Suede Leather
     Suede is known for its soft and luxurious feel. its distinct texture adds an elevated charm to any style.

Watch

  • ATM
     Pressure tests are measured in ATMs, which stands for atmospheres, and then converted to water depth to make the measurements easier to understand. Each ATM is equivalent to 10 meters (33 feet) of static water pressure.
  • Automatic movement
     An automatic or self-winding watch is a mechanical watch in which the mainspring is wound automatically as a result of natural motion of the wearer's arm, to provide energy to run the watch, making manual winding unnecessary.
  • Balance Spring
     Also referred to as a “hair spring” because of its thinness, the balance spring swings the balance wheel back and forth to regulate accurate time in a mechanical watch.
  • Balance Wheel
     Similar to a pendulum, the balance wheel in a mechanical watch oscillates at a steady pace to divide and regulate time in even units. The balance wheel is moved by the mainspring at its center, and drives the escapement.
  • Barrel
     The cylinder that holds the watches mainspring. The barrel uses a toothed rim to drive the train. Some watches feature double barrels to maximize power reserves.
  • Battery
     The power source of a quartz movement. A typical battery will last 12 to 18 months.
  • Bezel
     The ring (often made of steel) that encircles the watch face and secures the crystal to the watch. Some bezels provide additional function. See “Turning Top-ring Bezel.”
  • Bi-Directional Rotating Bezel
     The ring that surrounds the watch dial, often referred to as a “rotating bezel,” a bi-directional rotationg bezel is turned clockwise or counter clockwise to track elapsed time and to make mathematical calculations.
  • Bracelet
     A metal watchband with removable links for sizing.
  • Bridge
     Mounts fixed to the main plate that form the frame of the watch movement.
  • Butterfly clasp
     This clasp creates the illusion of a seamless band. Some have push-button release mechanisms for added security.
  • Cabochon
     A gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted.The resulting form is usually a convex (rounded) obverse with a flat reverse.
  • Calendar
     The calendar is a complication that shows the date, and sometimes the days and months the year. Less common perpetual calendars account for varying month lengths and leap year cycles.
  • Caliber
     Sometimes spelled “calibre,” a caliber is a letter and number combination code that typically denotes the manufacturer and movement type of a watch.
  • Case
     Sometimes referred to as the “body” of the watch, the case, typically made of metal, houses all the mechanical and display components.
  • Caseback
     The reverse side of a watch case that lies against the skin. Affixed to the case back with four rivets, the iconic Shinola case back plate displays manufacturing information, such as a laser-etched serial number.
  • Ceramic Three-Link Bracelet
     Zirconia has excellent wear resistance and its smooth finish creates a luxurious look. While the ceramic material is known for its toughness, it’s also lightweight, making this bracelet ultra comfortable to wear.
  • Chronograph
     A watch with stopwatch function to measure elapsed time while continuing to display conventional time, often using independent sub dials operated by start, stop and reset push-pieces.
  • Complication
     A complication is any watch feature that indicates more than the basic time, such as dates, chronographs, moon dials, etc.
  • Cordovan
     An equine leather made from the fibrous flat muscle beneath the hide on the rump of the horse.
  • Crown
     The knob on the outside of the watch for setting the time and date, and, in some cases, for winding the mainspring. Many Shinola watches feature a screw-down for added water resistance.
  • Crystal
     The protective, transparent cover that sits over the watch dial, protecting the watch from external elements. All Shinola watches feature premium, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, as opposed to glass, acrylic, plastic or quartz.
  • CuSn6
     The bronze alloy used in our Shinola Bronze Monster case. It is known for its excellent strength and resistance to wear and corrosion.
  • Day/Date Watch
     A watch with a complication that displays both the day of the week and the day of the month.
  • Deployant Buckle
     A buckle, typically part of a metal bracelet, that opens and clasps shut on hinges. Sometimes referred to as a “foldover buckle” or “deployment clasp,” a deployant buckle is designed to slide simply onto the wrist when open, and to secure the watch to the wrist when closed.
  • Deployment Strap
     A deployment clasp, also called a deployment buckle, a deployant clasp, a butterfly clasp, or an invisible double locking clasp is an expanding metal mechanism designed to fasten a watch band with a fitted look.
  • Dial
     The dial, or the watch “face,” features the numbers, indices and markers that indicate time based on the position of the hands.
  • Dual Timer
     A watch that simultaneously measures time in more than one time zone, via either extra hands or subdials. Dual timer watches are often used by frequent world travelers.
  • EOL
     The second hand skips several seconds at a time to indicate the watch battery's end-of-life (EOL). Watches with this feature have electronic circuits that detect when the battery voltage is getting low. Their circuitry makes the second hand move forward erratically to alert the wearer that it is time to replace the battery. Installing a new battery should restore the second hand to advance normally.
  • Gasket
     The gasket resists against water by sealing the caseback, crystal and crown.
  • Gear Train
     A watch’s gear system that transfers power from a mainspring in a mechanical movement, or battery in a quartz movement, to the hands.
  • Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
     The international time standard measured at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. In watchmaking, GMT refers to timepieces that feature a 24-hour dial and display multiple time zones. GMT watches are often used by pilots and associated with those who travel.
  • Guilloché
     A decorative technique in which a very precise, intricate and repetitive pattern is mechanically engraved into an underlying material.
  • Hands
      The parts of any analog watch that point to the hour, minute or seconds markers.
  • Horology
     The science of measuring time, including watchmaking and clock making.
  • Index
     A line on the dial of an analog watch that marks the hour in place of numbers.
  • Jewels
     A ruby or synthetic ruby that acts as a bearing to reduce friction and maintain the accuracy of a watch. Jewels surround the tips of the gears to keep them separated from components such as bridges and plates.
  • K1 Crystal
     The cover of the Detrola watch dial, is classified as the hardest, most durable mineral crystal with scratch resistance.
  • Low Surface Energy
     Similar to our anti-finger print coating, SLE lower the surface energy of the object to avoid finger print marks.
  • Lugs
     Part of the watch case to which watch straps and bracelets attach.
  • Main Plate
     The primary component to which all other movement components are attached. Also referred to as the “base plate.”
  • Mainspring
     Housed in the barrel, the mainspring is a coiled spring that, when wound, stores energy and drives the gear train of a watch.
  • Microtracking
     The ring of small tick marks between the larger second marks. It speaks to the higher frequency at which an automatic movement runs when compared to a quartz movement. The Sellita SW200-1 is a 4Hz movement, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour. The higher frequency is what creates the smoother sweep of the second hand in quality mechanical movements.
  • Moon Phase
     A complication that tracks lunar phases over the course of a month, from waxing to full to waning. Displayed by a lunar disc in the dial that moves through its cycle every 29.5 days.
  • Mother-of-Pearl
     The interior of a freshwater mollusk shell, often used on watch dials and jewelry for its luster and creamy iridescent white, blue and pink colors.

  • Push-piece
     The button that operates mechanisms such as chronograph stopwatch function.
  • PVD
     Physical Vapor Deposition is a plating process used to create durable, and corrosion resistant finishes in a multitude of colors and materials. It is currently featured on several of our polished, brushed, and sandblasted watch cases.
  • Quartz Crystal
     A small piece of synthetic quartz that oscillates at 32,768 times a second, providing a reliable beat that can be turned into electrical impulses via circuitry to provide a highly accurate mechanical pulse to drive timekeeping devices.
  • Quartz Movement
     A watch movement in which a battery passes an electric current though a quartz crystal to keep it oscillating. In turn, electrical pulses derived from those oscillations drive the motor that moves the watches hands, keeping precise time.
  • Quick Release
     Easy to change strap without requiring a strap removal tool. Simply slide the tab over to release the pins, angle the strap, and remove.
  • Remote Second Hand Sweep
     A long hand on a watch that measures seconds by moving the space of a minute for each second.
  • Rose Gold
     Rose or pink gold is a softer hued gold. The color is achieved through higher concentrations of copper in the alloy, and is popular in Europe and in retro-styled watches.
  • Rotating Bezel
     The ring that surrounds the watch dial, often referred to as a “rotating bezel,” is turned clockwise or counter clockwise to track elapsed time and to make mathematical calculations.
  • Sapphire Crystal
     The transparent, shatter- and scratch-resistant cover of the watch dial. Made of synthetic sapphire, the hard crystal protects the watch.
  • Screw Down Crown
     The crowns used for Shinola watches physically screw into the watch case in order to improve the atmospheric seal.

  • Shock Absorber
     A small incabloc spring that secures the balance staff jewel and prevents the staff from breaking.
  • Shock Resistance
     The ability of a wristwatch to withstand the impact of being dropped onto a wood floor from the height of three feet, as defined by U.S. government regulations.
  • Stainless Steel
     A durable, polishable metal alloy that is resistant to rust and corrosion. Often used in watchmaking for its strength and appearance.
  • Stepping Motor
     The stepping motor in quartz movement moves the gear train, which turns the watches hands.
  • Subdial
     A small dial on the main dial that shows additional information, such as elapsed minutes (on a chronograph watch) or the seconds function.
  • Super LumiNova™
     A brand name for the pigments that create the afterglow for illuminating watch hands, dials and bezels in the dark, using strontium aluminate-based non-radioactive and non-toxic photoluminescent pigments. The result is a far greater brightness than older zinc sulfide-based technology.
  • Tachymetric Scale
     A scale used to compute a speed based on travel time or measure distance based on speed.
  • Titanium
     Stronger and lighter than steel, titanium is particularly useful in watchmaking due to its resistance to saltwater corrosion, its appearance and its hypoallergenic qualities.
  • Top Ring
     The ring that surrounds the watch dial, often referred to as a "rotating bezel". A turning top-ring bezel is turned clockwise or counter clockwise to track elapsed time and to make mathematical calculations.
  • TR90 Resin
     TR90 is a high-grade resin known for its many useful qualities. Think lightweight, durable, resilient. The material displays color vibrantly but can clearly show the Detroit-built movement inside when left transparent.
  • Turning Top-Ring Bezel
     The ring that surrounds the watch dial, often referred to as a “rotating bezel,” a turning top-ring bezel is turned clockwise or counter clockwise to track elapsed time and to make mathematical calculations.
  • VS1
     Diamonds that have minor inclusions that are difficult to somewhat easy for a trained grader to see when viewed under 10x magnification.
  • Water Resistance
     The degree to which a wristwatch can, to a limited extent, withstand exposure to moisture and submersion in water, as measured by atmospheres (one atmosphere equals ten meters). All Shinola watches are five ATMs minimum, meaning they are water resistant in up to 165 feet of water.
