Jim Thorpe Great American Series Runwell Automatic 45mm
Shinola’s Great Americans Series is a collection of limited-edition products that honor those American icons who’ve helped shape our culture and made a lasting mark on this country’s history. Beautifully crafted by our skilled team of artisans and collaborators, we pay tribute to those who have been a source of inspiration for so many through storytelling, craftsmanship, and design.
This limited edition 45mm Runwell Automatic is our homage to the greatest athlete in the world: 1912 Olympic Gold Medalist Jim Thorpe. Also known by his Sac and Fox name, Wa-Tho-Huk, or “Bright path the lightning makes as it goes across the sky,” Thorpe was a celebrated pentathlete and decathlete, a professional football, baseball, and basketball player, and a lifelong activist for Native rights who overcame myriad obstacles levied against him due to his Indigenous heritage.
In 1912, the Sac and Fox member made history as the first Native American to win an Olympic gold medal for the United States. 110 years after his victory, the International Olympic Committee finally and fully righted the century-old wrong of stripping his medals for his participation in Minor League Baseball.
The historic record now officially reflects Thorpe as the sole champion of the 1912 Olympic Decathlon and Pentathlon.
In his life and legacy, Thorpe truly embodies the translation of his name, Wa-Tho-Huk: A Bright Path the Lightning Makes. He remains a thunderous beacon of pride for the Sac and Fox tribe and Americans everywhere who believe in the power of fair play and the love of the game.
Together in collaboration with the Thorpe family, we are proud to present the Jim Thorpe Runwell Automatic, a celebration of the tremendous valor and talent of the greatest athlete the world has yet to see.
To reflect his legacy, the Jim Thorpe Runwell Automatic features the colors not only of his Olympic fame, but of his longtime team, the Canton Bulldogs. The exhibition case back window, with custom enamel detailing, reveals the powerful movement at work. A supple, padded strap pays homage to vintage footballs.
And the story of Thorpe’s life is lovingly rendered through a limited-edition package that includes a felt banner, playing card, and booklet celebrating his achievements.
